Checking in with TJ Thyne
As Bones” launches its fourth season Wednesday, Sept. 3, on Fox, fans are still reeling from the revelation in the season three finale that sweet little Dr. Zack Addy (Eric Millegan) was an apprentice to a serial killer. So you can just imagine how Zack’s best friend, Dr. Jack Hodgins, is feeling. But if actor TJ Thyne gets his wish, you won’t have to just imagine Jack’s state of mind much longer. I thought the episode as they aired it was very good, but they wound up cutting out Jack’s honest reaction to finding out it was Zack,” Thyne says. And Jack had a really, really hard time with it. He was beyond distraught. I wish you could have seen that, because that would have been an important arc. I’m hoping that over the next many months you’ll see how much it still affects Jack.” Jack is in for a bumpy road ahead in his relationship with beautiful colleague Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) as well. Poor Jack,” Thyne says. Poor, poor Jack. That’s all I can say, but there are many hardships to come. It’s fun to play, though, because as humans we all go through the phases of relationships shifting and other life changes. I am just such a huge fan of the character that I have my fingers crossed that he’s going to be OK in the end.” The fifth of sixth siblings (“I was Bobby Brady”), Thyne traveled a lot with his large family as his dad moved from job to job. Watching his siblings onstage in high-school plays left Thyne fascinated with performing. I always knew that I was going to act, just not what medium I would wind up in,” he says. I love TV, but film and theater really are where my passion lies.”
Exclusive Interview: BONES Star Michaela Conlin
The TV Addict with BONES Star Michaela Conlin in Los Angeles, August 2008Full disclosure. Prior to last season, I had never watched a single episode of BONES and quite frankly, callously dismissed it as yet another oversimplified procedural [ie. CSI]. Yet after having the pleasure of interviewing TJ Thyne, Emily Deschanel, Eric Millegan and Michaela Conlin last Fall and absolutely falling head-over-heels in love with what by all accounts seems to be the nicest cast in Hollywood, I quickly changed my tune and jumped on the BONES bandwagon.Since then, I’ve been hooked. Because as any BONES fan will tell you. The show is so much more than your average who-done-it! Rather, it’s about the relationships between the characters. Which is why fans are still reeling from last May’s shocking finale. And more to the point, why I started off my interview with BONES star Michaela Conlin by asking the following. How shocked were you by the outcome of last season’s finale?Michaela Conlin: It was a big shocker wasn’t it.I mean “WOW,” I did not see that coming. When did you discover that Zack was Gormogon’s Apprentice?Maybe a week before we got the script. I mean we started hearing rumors, but really it was confirmed when we got the script. Eric had been with the show from the beginning so it definitely was a shock for everyone. But I think he’ll be back for a couple of episodes. At least that’s what I’m hearing. And by ‘hearing,’ would it be safe to assume that it’s actually going to happen and Zack will be back!Okay, Yes [she smiles] Zach will definitely be back.As a fan I feel so bad for an actor when it’s revealed that they’re actually a somewhat psychotic killer [or killer’s apprentice] and forced to exit the show.It is sad, but Eric is doing fine.
Bones: Season 4 Premiere “Yanks in the U.K.” Recap
Previously on Bones: Dr. Zack Addy (Eric Millegan) was busted as Gormagon’s apprentice and promptly arrested, leaving a hole in the hearts of the Jeffersonian team.We begin tonight’s new episode of Bones at Oxford University, where Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is giving some boring lecture about forensic anthropology. Booth (David Boreanaz) is asleep in the audience, snoring rather loudly. Bones asks him to stand as she acknowledges that her brand of “logical empiricism” isn’t always good, citing Zack, which gets Booth riled up.The first British joke comes as Booth reveals he got drunk the previous night with some Scotland Yard “boobies.” Bones corrects him by calling them “bobbies,” but Booth disagrees, based on the ample cup sizes of his escorts. Cheeky monkey. Wexler gets a call from Scotland Yard about a murder, which sends the Americans to a car retrieved from the Thames that contains heiress Portia Frampton. They meet a bobby named Kate Pritchard, who along with Wexler comprise the British version of Bones and Booth. The Brits want the Yanks to help, but first Booth wants a gun.The evidence is sent back to the Jeffersonian, where the team (along with Clark, Bones’ assistant while Zack was in Iraq) gleefully accepts the remains and some proper British slime. Angela (Michaela Conlin) goes back to her office to find her mystery husband Grayson. She gives him a big kiss, then asks for a divorce. She takes him to see Cam (Tamara Taylor), who ogles him like some kind of god, though Angelia wants everyone to be cool about it for Hodgins’ sake. Dr. Sweets (John Francis Daley) shows up, takes one look at Grayson and laughs. Grayson and Hodgins meet, and surprisingly, Hodgins (TJ Thyne) is not intimidated, even after learning Grayson is still in love with Angela. To distract himself, Hodgins discovers a scooter was transported in the back of the car, providing the perfect getaway vehicle for the murderer.Back in London, Booth and Bones learn from Portia’s land developing father (who Wexler works for) that she was dating Lord Harry Bonham. En route to the Duke’s palace, Booth still hasn’t mastered the art of driving on the other side of the road, scaring the heck out of Pritchard in the backseat. While Booth throws a temper tantrum over how much he hates England, Bones gets a call from Cam revealing Portia was two months pregnant.
Where Do We Go From Here?: FOX Drama Premieres Reboot Series
BONESReturns Wednesday, Sept. 3Where They Left Things: Wait. Zack (Eric Millegan) was Gormogon’s assistant, not Sweets? Really? Huh. That’s kind of sad. And Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) and Angela (Michaela Conlin) still aren’t married because of her missing first husband? That got swept under the rug a bit in the strike-shortened season, didn’t it?Where They Pick Up: As much as I love Bones, the show’s shoddy LA-for-DC location (or “faux-cation”) shooting has often been a drawback. The Bones/Booth half of the two-hour premiere was filmed in London and, as a result, the season starts with what is probably the series’ best-looking episode to date, featuring all manner of effective location work. The flirting and jokes about tea and driving on the wrong side of the road fly so fast most viewers won’t care that Zack is barely mentioned at all.Since Bones is a character-driven procedural more than a serialized drama, don’t expect the Zack-blowback to be major, but the series will have some fun with his absence, using a revolving cast of interns including characters played by Carla Gallo, Joel David Moore, Michael Badalucco and, in the premiere, Eugene Byrd returning as Clark. It will be a fine distraction.Meanwhile, viewers will get much more serialized satisfaction out of the first appearance by Angela’s hubby, who brings out an unexpectedly jealous side of Hodgins and putting the show’s most successful consummated relationship under new strain.blog.zap2it.com
Bones Sneak Peek: See What the Future Holds
ones is back! Well, almost, anyway. The season premiere is two weeks away, to be exact, on Sept. 3.To gear up, I recently caught up with Bones’ big bosses Hart Hanson and Barry Josephson and got a little insight into that Booth-Bones hookup you’ve been hoping for and some dish on both the London-set season premiere and the show’s future exotic foreign settings…Is your hometown in the running?Click in for the dish on season four and some sneak peeks of Booth and Bones in London!London Calling: In case you’ve been wondering what brings our heroes to England for the two-hour season premiere, according to David Boreanaz: “Bones is speaking to Oxford, and I’m speaking to Scotland Yard. There is an American businessman living in London, and his daughter is murdered?we pull her car out of the Thames?and it becomes a unified effort between Scotland Yard, the FBI and the forensics teams on both ends.“Foreign Affair? Detective work isn’t the only thing on the itinerary, however…there’s a little flirtation as well. Emily said: “I am giving a lecture at Oxford, and I have been invited here by Dr. Ian Wexler (Andrew Buchan), another forensic anthropologist?the top forensic anthropologist in England. He’s kind of like me in London. The lecture is on interstitial lamellae remodeling?one of my favorite subjects to speak about?and Booth falls asleep while I’m giving my lecture, which I don’t appreciate.” But don’t worry B&B fans, Booth isn’t falling down on the job. According to David Boreanaz: “Ian Wexler is the forensics guy over here, and he’s moving in on her?which is fine, but it’s also going to drive me crazy, obviously.“The Main Attraction: What about the rest of the year? Hart confirmed to me that Booth and Bones are getting horizontal in season four: “We will, in fact, see Booth and Bones together in bed. Naked.” Shut. Up. “Shut up, yourself. They’re naked in bed. You betcha. It may be the season ender, it may not…” Bedly nakedness? Aaah!Altar-ed States: Also in season four, expect the points of the love triangle between Angela (Michaela Conlin), Jack (T.J. Thyne) and Birimbau (Sean Blakemore) to get sharper. Hart said: “Angela’s missing husband, Birimbau, shows up during the season premiere, and merry mix-ups ensue. I hope it’s not what anyone expects. I hope people will expect either that everything goes great for everybody or that Birimbau breaks up Jack and Angela, and I don’t mind telling you that neither one of those things happen.“Dearly Departed: If you were worried that Zack (Eric Millegan) would be forgotten by the team or by the show’s producers, you can lay that fear to rest. According to Hart, “We are not replacing Zack…Eric and I are very good friends. Eric is fine. Zack’s not doing so well, but Eric is fine. He’s booked to be in the first episode we’re shooting in August.” (We’ll be catching up with our poor Zackaroni at the asylum where he currently resides…)Baby Bones: According to another executive producer, Barry Josephson, “We’re doing a lot with these guest interns,” referring to a series of grad students who will filter in and out of Brennan’s lab at the Jeffersonian, doing many of the tasks once assigned to Zack. In fact, said Josephson, “Some of the interns are going to be recurring, and I think what we’re going to do is look at the fan community and see who people like and why they like them, and that might impact our decision making.” Who said reality-show voting is the only form of participatory television?New People and Places: * Hart Hanson said of the remaining team members: “We have a girlfriend for Sweets (John Francis Daley). And Cam (Tamara Taylor) has a past, and because of that she approaches life a certain way, and we go into a bit more of what she is.” * The sets are also getting mixed up a bit this year, said Barry Josephson: “I think shows are going to end at different locations in D.C. this year, rather than always at the diner. We’ll do some location shoots as well as some spots on the Fox lot.” * All you overseas Bones fans, good news: You can start making up those “I Heart D.B.” posters now, because Bones stars may be coming to your country sometime soon! Barry Josephson told me that after the success of the first European expedition (the season premiere was shot on location in the U.K.), “We are going to do more international shows. The trip to England was at the suggestion of a studio executive, but when you see how well we do in other countries, it just makes sense. I’ve recently traveled a lot and have seen Bones airing in French Polynesia and New Zealand. And Bones is a forensic anthropologist, and she can travel anywhere, and she should!“Think Bones should shoot an episode in the place where you live? Tell the producers in the comments below why your town is the place to be!The special two-hour season-four premiere of Bones airs on Fox Sept. 3 at 8 p.m.uk.eonline.com

“Bones” Digs Up Angela’s Ex-Girlfriend for the Fourth Season
On a Bones panel at the 2008 International Comic-Con in San Diego last weekend, actor Michaela Conlin indicated there may be a lesbian romance on the horizon for her character next season, which kicks off with a special two-hour episode in early September.“Angela may have a relationship this season [with] someone by the name of Roxy,” Conlin volunteered to the enthusiastic crowd. The popular Fox crime drama ? created by Hart Hanson and starring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz as a forensic anthropologist and FBI agent, respectively, who work together to solve crimes ? averages 8 to 9 million viewers per episode, and is one of network television’s most-watched series.Angela Montenegro, an artist specializing in forensic facial reconstruction, is engaged to entomologist Dr. Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) and serves as Temperance “Bones” Brennan’s (Deschanel) confidante and best friend.Angela was revealed to be bisexual last season, when a private investigator mentioned she had received information about Angela from “a girl named Roxy, whose heart you broke in second-year art school.“But Angela’s bisexuality was hinted at as early as the first season, when she teased Bones in “The Man in the Fallout Shelter” that she might kiss her under the mistletoe at the Christmas party “in a festive, non-lesbian manner.” Later that season, in “The Man in the Bear,” a FedEx messenger whom Hodgins and Zach were trying to impress made it clear she was more interested in Angela than them, to which Angela responded with a laugh, “That is very sweet. Thank you.“During the second season, the writers carefully and slowly developed a romance between Angela and Hodgins, culminating in a wedding that was called off at the last minute when it was discovered that Angela was technically still married to a man in Fiji who refused to grant her a divorce. In the third season, Angela and Hodgins hired a private investigator to help her find and divorce him, to no avail. The fourth season picks up with that story line, as Angela’s mysterious husband finally makes an appearance in the opening episode.Because the writers and the audience have become so invested in the relationship between Angela and Hodgins, it seems unlikely that a rekindled romance between Angela and Roxy ? if it actually happens ? will be anything more than a temporary obstacle for Angela and Hodgins. But the recurring theme of Angela’s bisexuality is noteworthy, especially considering the scarcity of lesbian or bisexual characters on TV. Angela is one of only a few on scripted broadcast television next season ? the others are Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) on House, M.D., and Drs. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) on Grey’s Anatomy. Angela is also the only one who is Asian American (Conlin is of Chinese and Irish descent, and her character is also half-Chinese).Sydney Tamiia Poitier’s FBI agent character on the upcoming NBC series Knight Rider was portrayed as a lesbian or bisexual woman in the two-hour TV movie last spring, but the show’s executive producers are now distancing themselves from this and appear to be de-gaying her character.Casting for the character of Roxy and the timing of her appearance in the upcoming season is not yet known. If history is any guide, it is likely to coincide with the sweeps period in November. afterellen.com
