Bones – Season Two DVD Review

There are so many things to like about Hart Hanson’s quirky forensic drama, Bones. Loosely based on the experiences and characters of forensic anthropologist and author Kathy Reichs, the series follows FBI Agent Seely Booth (David Boreanaz) and his partner, forensic anthropologist Temperance ‘Bones’ Brennan (Emily Deschanel) as they track down serial killers, child murderers, and other human monsters all through the evidence left in their victims. The second season opens with Bones getting a new boss — Camille Sarosan (Tamara Taylor), whose conviction to stick to regular protocols puts her directly in the way of the experimental “outside the box” methods often used by Bones’ crew to find solutions. As Cam herself so indelicately puts it: “I am a diarrhetic seagull — everything goes through me.” Adding to the tension is the fact that Cam and Booth have had a romantic relationship in the past, putting added pressure on the long-denied sexual tension between Booth and Brennan.

No “Bones” to pick, just watch

I love crime procedurals. They require just enough brain power to keep me interested but not so much that I need a flow chart and CliffsNotes from the previous week to keep up. Also, I love it when smart women in lab coats squint at things. So I was interested to see these new promo shots for the third season of Bones. I’ve watched, on and off, since the first season and have enjoyed the sexy-meets-silly-and-marries-smart chemistry between Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). The pair is like the love child of Scully/Mulder and Maddie/David (from Moonlighting; please be old enough to remember Moonlighting). Now, in the interest of full disclosure, one of the cast members is the sibling of one of my close friends, so I could be biased. But I think the show has really come into its own and found a happy place between hardcore crime drama and whimsical romantic comedy. Plus, as a Buffy and Angel fan, I’m eternally inclined to root for David. And, well, getting to stare at Emily every week doesn’t hurt either. And the eye candy, of course, does not stop there. Michaela Conlin and Tamara Taylor make me wish I’d taken more of an interest in science. So bring on Sept. 25. And now that the show is moving to Tuesdays, I’ll have a one-two punch of Bones and House each week. My couch, it beckons.

TV Press Tour ’07

TV Press Tour ’07: Bones Up for a New Season of Romantic Osteology on FoxJen Godwin here, with scoop about one of my personal favorites, Bones. Read on to find out what’s in store this season for the Nick and Nora of the forensic anthropology set…Where Are They Now: According to show runner Hart Hanson, when the series premieres in the fall, we’ll pick up several months after last season’s finale, having missed “the amount of time that actually has past.” He also says this about the only thing you really care about (admit it!), the Bones and Booth romance: “We want to keep them apart as long as we can without annoying the audience, and there are a number of ways to do that. We use a number of little steam valves to release the pressure.” Boreanaz snickers at this, and Hanson shoots back, “I didn’t mean masturbation, David!” Also, according to Ms. Emily Deschanel, this season the show explores “how being left at the altar affected them.”Zack’s Back: Eric Millegan (and Hanson) confirm Zack Addy will be back this season, but they won’t confirm when or how. Eric did say, “He was sent home from Iraq early, and we’re going to explore why…”Squint Love: Michaela Conlin (Angela Montenegro) says of Angela and Jack‘s romance, “Angela is not one to be pinned down. She’s a free spirit who really fell in love. We’ve been working on finding my ex-husband. It should be pretty interesting.” My man, T.J. Thyne (Dr. Jack Hodgins), meanwhile, says, “I think Jack is madly, deeply and passionately in love with her.” All together now: Awww…Shallow Impressions: I can report from here in the catbird seat that Boreanaz’s biceps are ridiculous?good ridiculous. He looks great on the show in the suits, but I think maybe a tight T-shirt now and again wouldn‘t be such a bad idea…The Missing Episode: According to executive producer Stephen Nathan, “Player Under Pressure,” the ep that was pulled in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, will be reworked. The new version preserves the mystery elements and will bring the romantic storyline up to date. He expects it might air Dec. 7, and the old material (wherein Jack proposed to Angela) will hopefully appear on a DVD…sometime somewhere.Extra Eps: Nathan tells me the network definitely wants the 28-episode season (because of the potential writers’ strike and because reruns don‘t “work” anymore), but he’s afraid postproduction limitations may prevent that from actually happening. He expects no fewer than 24 eps but says 28 might be stretching it. Start sending your nudge letters now.Scene Shots: Exec producer Barry Josephson says they built out the FBI set this season, so look for more focus on the federales. And as a tease, he adds that the pressure releases for the Booth-Bones sexual tension may include more “third parties.”Featurette: Emily did a DVD commentary with her real-life father, Caleb Deschanel, and Stephen Fry for “The Glowing Bones in the Old Stone House.”

Conlin Wears White for ‘Bones’ Finale

Conlin Wears White for ‘Bones’ FinaleThe entire cast and one member of ZZ-Top are going to the chapelBy Daniel FienbergThere are certain unfortunate things that Michaela Conlin is used to encountering during a typical week on the “Bones” set — shattered skulls, mismatched limbs, vats of rendered viscera — but those challenges pale in comparison to the complications of a hastily organized wedding.”It was kind of crazy to end the year with a wedding,” Conlin laughs. “I didn’t realize — I don’t know why — that even though I was just playing a bride and not really getting married, you still go through all the stress of fitting the dress and taking the pictures and walking down the aisle and all that.”The second season finale of FOX’s “Bones” leads up to the wedding of Conlin’s Angela Montenegro and T.J. Thyne’s Dr. Jack Hodgins, a union many episodes and at least three proposals in the making. Although the “Stargazer in a Puddle” hour contains the requisite murder investigato n — a small body is found in a grocery cart — nearly as much time is spent on selecting Hodgins’ best man and Angela’s maid-of-hour and taking the necessary steps to make sure that the father-of-the-bride could attend.”It was very, very surreal. It felt very real,” Conlin says. “Billy Gibbons, who played my father, when we were standing in the foyer before the doors opened to walk down the aisle, he looked and he’s like, ‘My heart’s really beating. This is nervous.’ I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘It all feels so real.’ And it does. The production values are so high.”Yes, the Billy Gibbons in question is the bearded ZZ-Top icon, a character detail introduced in the first season and never exactly commented on, though Gibbons’ role is greatly expanded for the finale. Conlin has worked up a full back-story for the relationship.”He’s been gone for a lot of her childhood, traveling and on tour,” she explains. “And I know that a lot of Angela’s quote-unquote ‘free-spirited’ nature came from sort of raising herself as a child and being a bit of a wild banshee, not really having parental guidance. He’s not around very much, comes in and out, and I think that she’d love to have him around more. I think he will actually be around more, I hope, in the third season. It’s unexplained, but for a good reason. I think that Angela wishes that they were closer than they are.”At least one person couldn’t be happier about the character’s rock-n-roll paternity.”My real father, who I had to call up and say ‘They’ve cast someone as you, dad, and I hope that you approve,’ he’s so excited about the fact that it was him, because he’s such a big ZZ Top fan,” Conlin says. “It was one of my coolest moments to say, ‘It’s not going to be you playing you, dad, but it’s going to be Billy Gibbons playing you,’ and he was like ‘No way! That’s so cool.’”On a show so dominated by the chemistry between ostensible leads Bones (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz), Conlin has enjoyed the chance to give Angela extra human shadings and to let the character move to the center of the narrative.”It’s an amazing experience to fall in love with someone on a show, as it is in life,” she says. “It’s the most humbling, grounding, moving experience and it teaches you so much and that’s what it’s done for her. It’s grounded both of them and put their feet on the ground. It’s a beautiful thing when you fall in love with someone and that’s what it’s done for both of them — given them a lot more to look forward to at work.”That being said, Conlin adds, “I like being involved in one relationship, but at the core of Angela’s character is that she says what she feels and she doesn’t edit before she speaks. It was fun for a season to be able to do that and she’s been a little more reserved this season, as well she should be, considering she’s walking down the aisle.”And how does the actress, whose character is one of the biggest cheerleaders for a Bones-Booth hook-up, feel about that potentiality?”I’ve been working with those guys for a long time, so I know that if it ever happens, I think that Angela would be in the front row with a VIP ticket and a big popcorn and a Diet Coke. She’s really into it. I would love to see them hook up, but once they do, what happens after that?”For now at least, viewers don’t need to worry. It’s Angela’s turn to wear white. The “Bones” finale airs Wednesday (May 16) night at 8 p.m. ET.
