Angela and Hodgins became one of my favorite TV couples from the moment we saw the first hints of flirtation between them on Bones. So when Michaela Conlin braved the rainy New York City streets last week to pop into the EW.com offices (sans entourage!), I was thrilled to ask her all the character-related questions that have been plaguing my little fan brain since we saw the pair’s surprise wedding. The best part? She didn’t look at me like I was crazy. In fact, she was totally willing to geek out right along with me and speak about her character with thoughtfulness and excitement. Read on for her take on the couple’s surprise nuptials and what the future holds for our match made in squinty heaven.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you like how Hodgins and Angela’s wedding played out?
MICHAELA CONLIN: I did like how it played out. I was very surprised by it. I thought for the longest time it’d be Sweets and Daisy getting married. That was a big shocker. I think I heard rumblings of it only one or two episodes prior to getting the script. So it was kept pretty under wraps for a while, which is good. Normally, we have more of an idea of what may or may not happen. But that was a true surprise, which I liked. It was really fun to shoot. My father called and told me, ‘Why didn’t you tell me that you were going to get married?’ And I was like ‘Well, I wanted you to be surprised.’ There are very few real surprises left in life so I figured [shrugs]. I’m really excited about it and to see what they’re going to do with us next season. Angela isn’t really one to settle down. But I know Hart [Hanson, creator of Bones] has a lot in store for that challenge being that they’re so different. Hopefully Angela won’t feel like he’s a ball and chain. [Laughs] No, I’m just kidding. I think she’s always been just so in love with him. I think it’s going to be a fun season.

I don’t think she would have said ‘yes’ if she didn’t. She’s not the type.
No. I know. She’s had enough time to think about it.

Did you like the ceremony? Did you think it matched who they are as a couple?
Yea. That’s a good question. I hadn’t thought about that, but yea I do. I think underneath all the ex-husbands, ex-girlfriends, engagements, separations, they really just like being around each other and really get each other. I think that was enough for her.

Did you feel cheated at all because you didn’t get to wear a big wedding dress again?
No, I didn’t. Actually, I’m glad we did that because I already did that. She already walked down the aisle at the end of season 2. I was glad that we didn’t try to top that and make it something else. I was glad they did it the way that they did.

So what can we expect from them now?
I don’t think it will be too typical with them. I know that. I think it will be a challenge, definitely, but also happy…hopefully. [Laughs] But I do think it’s going to have its ups and downs. I know she loves him, but I don’t know. We’ll see how they fare. I have faith in them. I think they’re going to do fine.

Hart referred to Angela and Hodgins’ relationship as the show’s “steam valve” recently, the thing that releases a little bit of that tension created by the Bones/Booth relationship. Do you think it’s good to have something to satisfy the fans’ need for a happy ending?
I do. Hodgins and Angela have been together for a while now; I think it’s important for the series. I think it’s important to see a couple that’s functional and is really releasing some steam — if you want to put it that way. But I think the Brennan and Booth relationship had a big release in the 100th episode. I think they played that out well, showing the two of them being together prior to the series. So we’ll see what happens. But yes, I enjoy being the steam valve.

Do we find out in the last episode whether or not Brennan has told Angela about what happened in episode 100?
No. That’s a good question. We don’t address any of that…I think. Not that you’ve seen, I should say. From up to the point that you’ve seen, no. But they will. They will be soon. They tell each other everything. I think they always know what’s going on with the other. And I think Angela knows on some level, too.

So what can you tell me about the finale?
I can’t tell you much. I’m under strict orders, but I can tell you that it’s as big of an episode as the 100th in its own way. I think a lot of our season finales elicit very strong reactions from our fans, our very ardent fan base. I think this one is no different. It’s very surprising. That’s really all I can say.

What are you hoping to see for your character and some of the others next season?
Aside from Hodgins and Angela being married, I would really love for the focus for Angela to shift onto things other than her relationship storylines, which we’ve done a lot of in the last few seasons. I’d like to see maybe her mom coming to the show or maybe other members of her family. I’d like to get in to the family dynamics of Hodgins and Angela — being that he doesn’t have any and I have this really iconic father. I think that’d be really interesting to see. I really loved seeing Brennan and Booth with other people. I loved the stuff with Rena Sofer and Diedrich Bader [who play Dr. Catherine Bryar and Andrew Hacker]. I think it’s a really good match to light under everyone’s burner. It’s nice to see some new people in there making everyone jealous.

I like seeing Angela in the lab helping actively with cases. I feel like she’s been doing that a bit more. Was that a conscious decision?
I think so. The show now has self-sustaining episodes; we’re able to air them out of order. That had a lot to do with it, making sure that when the show reruns you’re not confused as to why I’m with a woman, with a man, with an ex-husband, a husband. I think it became more of a need to keep things clear. As well as I wanted to make sure she wasn’t an auxiliary member. I think that was something I’d sort of said that I wanted to address. I think they brought her in more, which is nice. But I would like to see her getting involved more. When Angela and Sweets went undercover, I thought that was really fun. I’d like to see her getting more involved with cases directly.

I feel like Cam is where your character was a couple of seasons ago, in terms of placement. I think they’re trying to find what role she plays in the group. What storylines would you like to see for her?
I really loved seeing Tamara in all the scenes with her daughter. I loved the whole Michelle storyline. I thought that it really warmed us up to her and showed us a different side to her, rather than her just being the boss and telling everyone what to do. I like that she now is sort of flummoxed by this young girl. I guess being that she was brought in sort as one of Booth’s ex-girlfriends, I feel like her and I started in very different [places]. I started as an original member of the squints and sort of a very — what’s the word I’m looking for — sexually?… [Laughs] yes, I was a sexually aggressive person from the beginning. So we’re different in that way. I really liked seeing her with her daughter. I think they were great. I’m also interested to see what happens with Sweets’ character because something interesting happens with him in the season finale.

“Interesting,” you say?
Yes. Something. [Laughs]

That’s all I’m getting, right?
Yes. [Laughs] But I’m interested in his backstory as well. We haven’t seen much of that. I think it’s time for him.

What are you up to during the hiatus?
I’m here [in New York] for five weeks. I really wanted to leave L.A. and not drive and go to theater and see my family and friends, and just be back in New York for a minute.

What are you hoping fans’ reaction is going to be to the finale?
I think it’s going to be a split. But I like it when it’s split.

…because Hart is the one who gets all the complaints via Twitter, right?
I know! He really does. But in his defense, that’s what I love about this season finale. He hasn’t sort of stopped trying to be provocative with the finale. He hasn’t pulled back with all of the people complaining or moaning or liking it or hating it. He did not give us a lukewarm finale, which I like. I’d rather it be this way than something mediocre, boring.

Something people forget.
Yea. I mean everyone’s still talking about the… when was that first… God, I can’t even think. This is when I don’t have enough coffee. My brain starts to decompose, like a body.

The Bones season finale airs 8pm ET Thursday on Fox.

Hold the phone, you guys. Last night’s episode of Bones totally caught me off guard. Immersing myself in spoiler alerts all day normally takes the edge off, as I haven’t been surprised by a television show since I saw Fringe’s Peter Bishop sparkle and shine earlier this season. But script author Kathy Reichs—the real-life producer, novelist, professor, forensic anthropologist, and person on whom Dr. Temperance Brennan was based—definitely pulled a fast one on me when she decided to have Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) and Angela (Michaela Conlin) get married—and in jail! I’m definitely all aboard the Hodgins-Angela ‘ship. But marriage? Really? Wasn’t it technically the result of egregious product placement?

The relationship between these two nerdy lovebirds has been more enjoyable to watch this season than the one between Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) because Hodgins and Angela are so dang open and honest about their feelings. It’s so refreshingly mature! Plus, Thyne and Conlin have terrific chemistry and clearly they’ve worked hard over the last five seasons to develop a real connection between the two characters. The tension between Hodgins and Angela has been particularly noticeable over the last few episodes since Angela’s pregnancy scare. As soon as they landed behind bars together, it was painfully obvious that they would reconnect. It was completely surprising, however, that they decided to get hitched.

I applaud the spontaneity and unexpectedness of the whole thing, especially because the informality of it didn’t necessarily upstage Sweets’s (John Francis Daley) proposal to Daisy (Carla Gallo) last month in “The Bones on the Blue Line.” I also think that Hodgins and Angela’s marriage will help Brennan and Booth make significant strides in their relationship (once they forgive the new couple for not inviting them to the wedding, of course). But I still can’t help but think that a tiny bit of this show’s magic is gone. Where will the Angela-Hodgins drama come from now? A real pregnancy?

T. J. Thyne has revealed that he was thrilled his Bones character Jack Hodgins got married.

In the latest episode of the show, Hodgins tied the knot with Angela (Michaela Conlin) in jail.

“I’m so excited,” Thyne told Zap2It. “It was a really great storyline.

“For Michaela and I it was a blast also because we didn’t get to work with each other as much as we were working with each other [before] so we were both kind of missing that interaction. But it’s been really fun to kind of bring it back together and we had a blast on that.”

Thyne added that he is thrilled with the storyline because he has always wanted Hodgins and Conlin to marry.

“I’m stoked,” he said. “I’m really excited for Jack. It was my one thing since the show started – [it] was, ‘I hope he gets to end up with Angela in the end’.”

Bones continues Thursdays at 8pm on Fox in the US and Thursdays at 10pm on Sky1 in the UK.

Michaela Conlin has suggested that her Bones character Angela will have a difficult marriage in the future.

Angela tied the knot with Hodgins (T. J. Thyne) on last night’s show, but Conlin has now suggested that the relationship will be problematic.

Speaking to Zap2It, she explained: “I feel good about [the storyline]. There’s been so much push and pull between the two of them for years.

“I think it’s going to be an interesting season. I don’t think it’s going to be a happy-go-lucky marriage for the two of them at all. Not that it’s going to go badly… they’re very different, which is great. The opposites attract thing I think we’ll see a lot of in the coming season.”

Conlin also confirmed that Michaela’s father (Billy Gibbons) will return to the show.

“My dad is coming back, yeah,” she said. “He puts Hodgins to a big test, actually. And we’ll see if Hodgins passes or not. It’s a pretty gruelling test.”

I did not realise how simple the game is, I thought it would be really hard and complicated, but in real life it isn’t, normally I am not one for gambling but when the husband played (not with real money of course only in his head), he won £200.

I would like to join a friendly and helpful community to allow me to play Slot Machines, maybe on that gave you the choice between playing for hard cold cash and playing for the fun of it so free, I know there are a few websites that offer this facilities but I would also like to free safe. As most on-line activities you can get a lot of enjoyment and fun from these games so I think I might have to give them ago.

After last week’s pivotal and emotionally wrenching 100th episode, it’s back to business as (almost) usual on Bones. Two teenage girls are exploring….each other…in a bale of hay when a raccoon feasting on a maggoty skull flies in and smacks one of them in the face. Ooh baby, that’s a freakin’ mood killer if I ever heard of one. Our favorite—though by now, somewhat dysfunctional—super-scientist/super-agent team is called into the town to investigate. A rather large coincidence: the town is where Brennan grew up and went to high school, and it happens to be the week of her high school reunion.

Brennan finds more remains and quickly determines that the victim was killed in a manner consistent with a spooky legend that dates back to when Brennan was in high school: “The Butcher of Burtonsville High.” And, like the master of social interaction she is, Brennan immediately goes about alienating the local law enforcement, specifically Deputy Conway, a woman she went to school with. Conway doesn’t immediately remember Brennan, but instead goes about putting the moves on Booth (at least somebody is). Brennan praises her for losing weight—because it’s “better for your cardiovascular system”—and points out that Conway’s weight was probably the source of the vast social “derision” she received in high school. “Oh I remember you now: the creepy girl.” Booth mostly succeeds in hiding a small smile, but you can tell he’s enjoying this a little bit. He is, after all, entitled; getting rejected by the woman you love (even though she loves you too and is just too afraid to confront that) should earn you some free bitterness.

What’s really nice about this episode though is the balance that Boreanaz finds in portraying Booth’s emotional state. I was afraid this episode would either harp too much on the events of last week or not mention them at all. But Boreanaz takes care of it perfectly. There are several moments where you see his disappointment, but Booth never comes off as sullen or trying too hard to pretend that he wasn’t affected by Brennan pouring cold water over his heart. Boreanaz is quite funny in several scenes, especially during a videoconference with Sweets in which he cavalierly (and with no small trace of annoyance) explains that staying in a hotel with Brennan won’t be an issue and that he has completely moved on and already has a date lined up.

Emily Deschanel is equally hysterical in a whole slew of scenes. Sweets recommends that Booth and Brennan will get better results if they hide their FBI status and pretend to be just a married couple attending Brennan’s high school reunion. Putting Brennan into her high school reunion sets up the ultimate venue to showcase how impossibly socially handicapped Brennan is. Seriously, could there be any other situation that Brennan is less trained for? She’s the ultimate fish out of water, and the results are pretty awesome to watch.

Booth encourages Brennan to attend the reunion because, besides the whole we-gotta-solve-the-murder-thing, this is the perfect chance for her to make up for having not been popular by showing off how beautiful and successful she became. Unfortunately, he doesn’t explain this concept to her as if he were talking to a third-grader. You’re supposed to rub your success in subtly, so that no one can accuse you of doing it deliberately. Brennan doesn’t understand this, and just ends up digging herself into deeper and deeper graves. Booth tries to help her out, but he ain’t a miracle worker. The episode isn’t mean-spirited though; Brennan is mostly unaffected by her failures to connect with her former classmates because she’s just so clueless about the nature of human interactions.

All of the highlights you’d hope would come from this scenario happen; you get to see Booth make fun of Brennan’s yearbook photo (she’s the only one not smiling), and revel in the fact that she was a complete high school misfit. “You’re Wednesday Adams…I’ll bet you had a pet rat too!” he exclaims. “No, I had a mouse, and a snake and some spiders.” “Wow and you weren’t popular? Now that’s amazing.” In fact, Brennan’s only friend in high school was the creepy janitor who used to find dead animals for her to dissect and talk about the philosophy of death with her. This janitor—who loves knives–is played by Robert Englund, the original Freddy Krueger, and all of the tongue-in-cheek references you’d expect are made. What’s most funny and oddly sweet about his character is how affectionate Brennan is toward him. Even when he’s grinning like a maniac and talking about death and holding a lethal blade, she can’t understand why Booth finds him alarming.

All of the murder stuff is satisfying, and Angela gets to do a couple of extra-nifty simulation things and shows them to Brennan via videoconference. I loves Bones episodes where Booth and Brennan are away working a case and all of their correspondence with the Jeffersonian has to be through conferences. I like having that separation between our principals and the lab. The physical gap somehow makes Booth and Bones seem like they are existing together in a more intimate, private world, and that’s how it should be.

Initially, when I realized that the B storyline was going to be Wendell finding out that Angela thought she was pregnant and didn’t tell him, I feared the worst. But surprisingly, the Angela stuff didn’t irritate me this week. The subplot was handled well, didn’t dawdle, and Michaela Conlin succeeded in making Angela appear human and not annoying at the same time—a rare feat. And of the revolving interns, Wendell has always been the one I liked the most, and I’m glad that he isn’t going to be Angela’s plaything anymore.

Even Cam came off well this week, with a couple of great lines, telling Bones that “It’s always a tad creepy when you admire the killer’s handiwork,” and realizing after watching Wendell and Hodgins bicker over who had the coolest lab discovery that she “runs a kindergarten.”

The other highlight: seeing Booth and Brennan on the dance floor. Brennan asks Booth to a slow dance and he resists, guarded after being so vulnerable last week. But when he sees how much it means to her—to get to dance at the prom she never went to—he relents. And when you can clearly see how intense Brennan’s feelings are for Booth, you almost want to slap her for being too emotionally controlled to take the risk and fight for what she wants. What she and Booth both want. But unlike some fans that are so ready to run Brennan over with a truck for warding off Booth, I understand why she did and why she is the way that she is. When your parents abandon you and disappear when you’re fifteen and you go from bad foster family to bad foster family, it’s pretty reasonable that twenty years later you’d still be dealing with serious abandonment issues.

She told Booth that she doesn’t have an open heart like he does, that he should be protected from her…but the truth is that she’s afraid that he won’t always feel the way that he does about her, and that he’ll abandon her just like her parents did. We caught a glimpse of this in the season premiere. She probably figures she has a better chance of keeping Booth in her life as his friend and partner than she would as his love.

Overall I’m pretty pleased with this season so far. There have been a couple of crappy episodes, but by and large things have been much better than they were in season four, and Booth and Brennan are seriously progressing in their relationship.

Season 5, Episode 17: The Death of the Queen Bee (originally aired April 15, 2010)
