Not just squints and bonesBy MICHAEL CHEANGWhat is it like for the affable Emily Deschanel to play a character that is more comfortable around dead bodies than human beings?FROM the way she plays the socially-inept and ultra-serious forensics expert Dr Temperance “Bones” Brennan in the TV series Bones, you might be forgiven for assuming that actress Emily Deschanel would be just as hard to talk to as her character. It turns out that Deschanel is nothing like her onscreen persona, judging from her friendly and easy-going manner during this recent phone interview. Nevertheless, Deschanel herself admits that while her personality differs greatly from Dr Brennan, she can still relate to the character in many ways.Bones of connection … Emily Deschanel loves the relationship between her character, Dr Temperance Brennan, and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).“Like her, I am very into my work, and don’t have much time outside of my work to see many people or do much,” she says from Los Angeles. “I can relate to her, and I can understand what it is like to get focused on something, but lose sight of some other important things in your life.“But at the same time, I am definitely a more social person than Brennan, and I am better with people!”
